Nyul Nyul Healthy Country Coordinator

Nyul Nyul Country is on the Western Coast of the Dampier Peninsula, North of Broome, Western Australia. Nyul Nyul Country is managed accordingly and the Nyul Nyul IPA has been dedicated over 144,500 ha of land and sea on which Nyul Nyul people have sole, not shared native title rights and have management influence. Country within the native title boundary, but outside the IPA is shared with neighbouring Jabirr Jabirr and Nimanburr people. As neighbouring Traditional Owners build their capacity to develop land and sea management programs, the Nyul Nyul people will collaborate on shared country activities that align with common priorities for those areas.

About the Role:

The Nyul Nyul Healthy Country Coordinator will be responsible for managing Nyul Nyul stakeholder relationships and Traditional Owner governance as it relates to looking after country, as well as operational implementation and monitoring oversight of the Nyul Nyul Healthy Country and IPA Management Plan 2024 – 2034, in conjunction with the Nyul Nyul Country Operations Plan.

This position will be supported by funding from the IPA program Administered by DCEEW and NIAA.

The position will be a KLC Land and Sea Unit (LSMU) Employee and work with the cultural direction of Nyul Nyul Healthy Country Steering Committee & Nyul Nyul PBC.

You will be a great communicator and partnership manager, strategic thinker with strong organisational skills and experience undertaking on country program with Traditional Owners.

Key Responsibilities:

· Support the implementation of the Nyul Nyul Country Plan and IPA Management Plan 2024 – 2034.

· Coordinate on country Nyul Nyul work already committed through grants and approved research

· Be responsible for coordinating the Healthy Country Advisory Committee (HCAC) / members and enacting their directions on project and organisation priorities

· Coordinate with Joint Management Activities

· Engage and maintain relationships with Nyul Nyul’s current State and Commonwealth stakeholders and seek new potential partners

· Act as a key contact for project partners, Nyul Nyul PBC and Traditional Owners regarding land and sea country matters

· Ensure Governance and support to the Nyul Nyul Healthy Country Advisory Committee and finalising deliverables on current grants, and inclusive of:

o Supporting Nyul Nyul to engage in regional projects to support developing Land and Sea Management outcomes, such as ISWAG, Ranger/Healthy Country Forums

o Coordinate and utilise resourcing and staff from the KLC LSMU to undertake on country work and support the development and capacity building of Nyul Nyul Rangers

Project Implementation

· With the HCAC review, consult, submit and implement IPA Annual workplans Monitor project progress and budgets (with support of Program manager)

· Prepare IPA and project mid-year and annual reports

· Plan and facilitate meetings and on-country trips for Traditional Owners including co-ordinating hiring of casual rangers and cultural advisors as required

· Work to establish in consultation with the KLC and Nyul Nyul Rangers the appropriate assets including office space to support on country activities

Other

· Maintain compliance with KLC policies, processes and procedures

· Actively contribute to the health and safety of the workplace by adhering to all health and safety policies and procedures

· Demonstrate an awareness of and commitment to the KLC Vision and its Values

· Participate in relevant training and professional development activities

· Other tasks as directed

Selection Criteria:

1. Please detail what interests you about the role and the skills, experience and knowledge you think you can bring to the position.

2. Experience in working with Aboriginal organisations’ in a similar role, or role with transferable skills, or qualifications in related field.

3. Experience or ability to coordinate remote area trips with staff and stakeholders and manage WHS risks.

4. Excellent oral, interpersonal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate with a range of audiences.

5. Demonstrated skills in project management, administering budgets, mapping of activities and providing direction with small teams.

6. Experience in working on conservation and land management programs, and integration of Traditional Knowledge.

Essential:

1. Current driver’s licence

2. Ability and willingness to travel regularly, including ocean-based travel and camping for extended periods (4+ nights)

Desirable:

1. Coxwains Certificate Grade 1 or 2.

2. Contextual understanding of Nyul Nyul (preferred) or Kimberley Aboriginal cultures, protocols and issues in relation to caring for country.
